These Teaching for How Students Learn practice guides describe the practices in AERO's learning and teaching model.

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has developed a model of learning and teaching that identifies the most effective and efficient teaching practices aligned with how students learn. These practices are further described in our practice guides and demonstrated in our videos of practice.

These practice guides support the Enabling, Planning, Instruction and Gradual release phases of the model by:

  • defining the practice
  • outlining the key supporting research evidence
  • providing examples of how teachers can use specific strategies and techniques.

Using the resources – Teachers

Practice guides offer evidence-based strategies and techniques to help you create inclusive, safe and supportive learning-focused environments. Use the practice guides alongside AERO’s model to make decisions about your teaching for each phase of learning – whether students are acquiring, consolidating or applying their learning. Treat the guides as ongoing resources, revisiting them to refine your practice and enhance student learning outcomes.

Using the resources – School leaders

Use these practice guides to support teachers in understanding and applying effective, evidence-based practices. Facilitate professional learning by incorporating key principles into staff meetings, mentoring and collaborative planning to build shared understanding and develop consistent practices. Encourage teachers to use the questions in the Developing your practice section of each guide to reflect, make a plan to develop their practice and seek feedback to monitor the impact for their students.
