Proficiency in maths is fundamental to a student’s success – both at school and in life. 

This explainer describes 5 strands of maths  proficiency, which enable students to understand and do maths, as well as use it and appreciate it in various aspects of their lives.

It highlights the importance of:

  • breaking up and sequencing learning content
  • giving students opportunities to practice, develop and apply reasoning skills
  • fostering positive dispositions towards maths
