These Teaching for How Students Learn videos demonstrate evidence-based teaching practices in real school environments. They are designed to exemplify the practices in AERO's learning and teaching model.

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has developed a model of learning and teaching that identifies the most effective and efficient teaching practices aligned with how students learn. These practices are further described in our practice guides.

These videos provide a complementary suite of resources for teachers and school leaders that demonstrate how a range of schools and teachers use evidence-based practices to maximise effective learning.

This collection includes:

  • practice videos, which focus on a specific teaching practice in diverse contexts, learning areas and with students of varying ages.
  • long lesson videos, which feature extended sequences of teaching from a lesson to show how evidence-based practices work together.

Resources in this collection

Instruction phase

These videos relate to the Instruction phase of the model, showing how teachers from various contexts manage the cognitive load of learning tasks to support new learning.

Gradual release phase

These videos relate to the Gradual release phase of the model, showing how teaching from various contexts can maximise retention, consolidation and application of learning.

Using the resources – Teachers

Watch these videos with a copy of the related practice guide to actively identify evidence-based teaching strategies in action. This will help you connect these strategies to your own classroom practice. Use AERO’s model to reflect on how this area of practice integrates with others, drawing comparisons between the video examples and approaches in your own school. Pause as needed to reflect on the teaching you see, how this relates to evidence-based practices described in practice guides and to teaching and learning approaches in your school. Use the insights you gain to identify techniques to use with your students or discuss with a mentor.

Using the resources – School leaders

Use these videos in staff meetings or team discussions to spark meaningful professional development conversations. Videos featuring individual schools provide a valuable starting point for exploring effective teaching strategies and sharing insights with colleagues about a range of practices. Videos focussed on individual practices can benefit targeted professional learning on the application of specific teaching techniques and strategies across the school.
