In 2023, the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) investigated student attendance in Australian schools at the request of Education Ministers.
This work was overseen by a National Working Group comprised of representatives of each of the 8 state and territory departments of education, Independent Schools Australia, National Catholic Education Commission, and the Australian Government. The group provided input into the design of the project and reporting.
This report presents the findings of 3 activities AERO conducted for this investigation:
- analysis of ACARA’s attendance data
- rapid literature review on barriers to attendance
- rapid literature review on approaches to supporting attendance and addressing student absence.
