Our purpose

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) works towards excellent and equitable outcomes for all children and young people by advancing evidence-based education in Australia. We do this by:

  • generating high-quality evidence
  • making high-quality evidence accessible
  • enhancing the use of evidence in Australian education.

Our history

A key recommendation from Through Growth to Achievement: Report of the Review to Achieve Excellence in Australian Schools (sometimes referred to as the Gonski review) was the establishment of a national education evidence body to ensure that all school leaders, teachers and educators have access to the best available evidence and resources and are supported to easily and effectively incorporate them into their practice in schools and early childhood services across Australia.

In December 2019, education ministers agreed to create an institute: ‘To position Australia’s educators at the forefront of education research to improve learning outcomes for all children and young people.’

The creation of a national education evidence organisation was one of the national policy initiatives under the National School Reform Agreement, aimed at lifting outcomes across Australian education. 

AERO is funded by an initial investment of $50 million over the next three years by the Commonwealth and the combined states and territories. AERO will become incorporated in 2021.

Reconciliation Action Plan

AERO is committed to making a positive contribution to the success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. As a new organisation, AERO needs to build relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, listen to their priorities and understand how these communities would like us to work with them. AERO will be developing its Reconciliation Action Plan over the course of 2021 to make sure it contains concrete actions, regarding both the work we do and the way we do it, that reflect the expectations of these communities.
